Muscle of the Thigh

 MUSCLE OF THE THIGH

There are two compartment in muscle of the thigh.

A) ANTERIOR THIGH MUSCLES
(QUADRISHAP FEMORIS)

B) POSTERIOR THIGH MUSCLES
(HAMSTRING MUSCLE)

C) MEDIAL THIGH MUSCLLE
(ADDUCTOR MUSCLE)

    A) ANTERIOR THIGH MUSCLE (QUADRISHAP FEMORIS )

    Anterior Thigh Muscle
    Anterior Thigh Muscle

    -Quadrishap femoris

There are Four muscle of quadrishap femoris/anterior thigh

    It contein four muscle ……

    1) Rectus femoris, 2) Vastus medialis , 3) vastus intermedialis, 4) vastus lateralis

    -Sartorius

    -Articular genu

    1) RECTUS FEMORIS

    2) VASTUS MEDIALIS

ORIGIN: Intertrochanteric line, spiral line, medial lip of linea aspera, medial supracondylar line, medial intermuscular septum, tendon of adductor longus and adductor magnus.

INSERTION: Tendon of rectus femoris, medial border of patella, medial tibial condyle.

    NERVE SUPPLY: Femoral nerve (L2–L4).

    ACTION: Extends knee.

    3) VASTUS INTERMEDIUS

ORIGIN: Upper 2/3 of anterior and lateral surface of femur, lower part of lateral intermuscular septum.

INSERTION: Deep surface of quadriceps tendon, lateral border of patella, lateral tibial condyle.

    NERVE SUPPLY: Femoral nerve (L2–L4).

    ACTION: Extends knee.

    4) VASTUS LATERALIS

ORIGIN: Intertrochanteric line, greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity, lateral lip of linea aspera.

INSERTION: Tendon of rectus femoris, lateral border of patella.

NERVE SUPPLY: Femoral nerve (L2, L4).

    ACTION: Extends knee.

    5) SARTORIUS

ORIGIN: Anterior superior iliac spine and area just below.

INSERTION: Upper part of medial side of tibia.

NERVE SUPPLY: Femoral nerve [L2, L3].

ACTION: Flexes hip and knee, laterally rotates and abducts hip, medially rotates tibia on femur.

    B) POSTERIOR THIGH MUSCLE (HAMSTRING)

    Posterior Thigh Muscle
    Posterior Thigh Muscle

There are four muscle in posterior thigh muscle it also called hamstring muscle

    1) Semitendinosus

    2) Semimembranosus

    3) Biceps femoris

    4) Adductor magnus

    1) SEMITENDINOSUS

    ORIGIN: Ischial tuberosity.

INSERTION: Tibia (upper part of medial surface).

NERVE SUPPLY: Tibial division of sciatic nerve (L5–S2).

ACTION: Flexes knee, extends hip and medially rotates tibia on femur.

    2) BICEPS FEMORIS

    ORIGIN

Long head: Ischial tuberosity, sacrotuberous ligament.

Short head: Lower half of lateral lip of linea

aspera, lateral supracondylar line of femur, lateral

    intramuscular septum.

INSERTION: Head of fibula, lateral tibia condyle.

    NERVE SUPPLY: Sciatic nerve (L5–S2).

    Long head—tibial division.

    Short head—common peroneal division.

ACTION: Flexes knee and extends hip, laterally

    rotates tibia on femur.

    4) ADDUCTOR LONGUS

    ORIGIN: Front of pubis.

INSERTION: Middle third of linea aspera.

NERVE SUPPLY: Anterior division of obturator nerve (L2–L4).

    ACTION: Adducts thigh.

    C) MEDIAL THIGH MUSCLE

    1) Adductor longus

    2) Adductor brevis

    3) Adductor magnus

    4) Gracilis

    5) Pectinius

    1) ADDUCTOR LONGUS

    ORIGIN: Front of pubis.

INSERTION: Middle third of linea aspera.

NERVE SUPPLY: Anterior division of obturator nerve (L2–L4).

    ACTION: Adducts thigh.

    2) ADDUCTOR BREVIS

ORIGIN: External aspect of body and inferior ramus of pubis.

INSERTION: Upper half of linea aspera.

NERVE SUPPLY: Obturator nerve (L2, L3).

    ACTION: Adducts hip.

    3) ADDUCTOR MAGNUS

ORIGIN: Inferior ramus of pubis, conjoined ischial ramus, inferolateral aspect of ischial tuberosity.

INSERTION: Linea aspera, proximal part of medial supracondylar line.

NERVE SUPPLY: Obturator nerve and tibial division of sciatic nerve (L2–L4).

    ACTION: Adducts thigh.

    4) GRACILIS

ORIGIN: Pubis (interior ramus and lower half of

    body), adjacent ischial ramus.

INSERTION: Tibia (upper part of medial surface).

NERVE SUPPLY: Obturator nerve (L2, L3).

ACTION: Flexes knee, adducts hip, medially rotates tibia on femur.

    5) PECTINEUS

ORIGIN: Pecten pubis, iliopectineal eminence, pubic tubercle.

INSERTION: Along a line from lesser trochanter to linea aspera.

NERVE SUPPLY: Femoral nerve (L2,3) occasionally accessory obturator (L3).
