Ulnar Nerve | Ulnar Nerve Course, Branches, Muscle Supply, Test & Palsy

Ulnar Nerve Comes from Medial cord of brachial plexus. Ulnar nerve run on medial side of the brachial artery. Ulnar nrve also called ” Musician Nerve ” .

ROOT VALUE OF ULNAR NERVE :-

Root value of Ulnar Nerve is C8, T1

    COURCE OF ULNAR NERVE :

=> Ulnar nerve run on medial side of the brachial artery

=> Ulnar nerve pears medial intermuscular septum.

=> at elbow level Ulnar nerve pass behind medial epicondyle. Ulnar nerve palpable at behind medial epicondyle

=> Ulnar nerve enter in forearm by passing between two head Flexor Crapi Ulnaris

=> At last, pass superficialy to flexor ratinaculum and it coverd by volar carpal ligament and enter in hand

    BRANCHES OF ULNAR NERVE :

=> Palmar cutaneous branch :  supply to the skin over hypothenar eminance

=> Dorsal cutaneous branch : supply to skin backword wind  and proximal part of medial  21/2  fingers

=> Articular Branchhes : supply to elbow joint

    ULNAR NERVE SUPPLY :-

    ulnar nerve
    Ulnar nerve

    MOTOR SUPPLY

    IN FOREARM :

=> In forearm ulnar supply only two muscle

    • Flexor carpi ulnaris
    • Medial half of flexor digitorum profundus

    IN HAND :

=> In hand ulnar nerve supply all Hypothenar muscles, palmar and dorsal interossei, 3rd & 4th lumbricals and adductor pollicis

    • Abductor digiti minimi
    • Flexor digiti minimi
    • Opponens digiti minimi
    • Adductor pollicis
    • Palmar interossei
    • Dorsal interossei
    • 3rd and 4th interossei

    Sensory supply

Sensory supply of Ulnar nerve is medial part of Fourth finger, fifth finger.

ULNAR NERVE ENTRAPMENT / ULNAR NERVE INJURY / MEDIAN NERVE PALSY  :

    • CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROM :-

=> Ulnar nerve commonly injured between two head of Flexor carpi ulnaris.

=> Cubital tunnel syndrom couse by Pressure and Streching to Ulnar Nerve and it couse tingling, numbness to ring finger and small finger or also weakness of the hand is present.

=> Also Ulnar Nerve injured at elbow behind medial epicondyle and in hand Ulnar Nerve compress by flexor ratinaculum

=> Due to injury of Ulnar Nerve it couse Claw hand

=> Claw hand characterised by hyperextention of metacarpophalageal joint and flexion interphalangeal joint

    ULNAR NERVE TEST :

    • Tinel’s sign / hoffmann tinel sign :

=> Percution over ulnar side of wrist joint were ulnar nerve passed. test positive indicates the tingling on hand.

    • Froment sign :

Ask petient to hold flat object between thumb and index finger. positive test indicates the hold object with hyperflexion interphalangeal joint
